To African American students who operate from very different worldviews, these assumptions are mystifying and nebulous. “Different” worldviews of African American students does not mean good or bad, or more or less effective. Rather, mentoring means divergent, dissimilar from the understandings of how success in graduate programs is structured. Accordingly, explicitly providing African American graduate students with some of the ingredients that ensure success could be central to their persistence.
