Shakespeare tossed his head and nickered a complaint, and Gwen tightened her grip on the reins. ” She wondered if she was about to see the elusive Mr. McKinley. That is, she might see him if she could get her horse to stop dancing in the traces. “Calm down, Shakespeare. ” The motorcar slowed when the driver saw her, but before the car rolled to a stop, the engine backfired. Shakespeare reared and started to bolt. Thankfully, Gwen had twisted the reins around her hands, prepared for this very thing.

He had only six weeks to become a fixture in the minds of the town’s citizens. From now until the election, he must spend more time in Bethlehem Springs than he spent at the resort. It was as simple as that. Fagan had informed him that his opponent, one Hiram Tattersall, was not particularly well liked. That was good news. Still, Morgan surmised Harrison Carter would not be glad to know he was running for office. If the chairman of the county commissioners gave his support to Tattersall, the election might not be easily won, despite Morgan’s best efforts.

I would do a better job than he would. But of course she had no intention of running for mayor. No intention whatsoever. Morgan McKinley wanted nothing more than to punch that artificial smile off Harrison Carter’s face. “You’ll have to wait until after the election, Mr. McKinley. I’m sorry. ” Before Morgan did something he would regret — something that would get him tossed into the jail one floor below — he bid a hasty farewell and left the commissioner’s chambers. When he exited the municipal building, he paused on the sidewalk long enough to draw a calming breath.
