INTRODUCTION In the past 30 years, more than 5,000 publications dealing with information literacy (IL) and bibliographic instruction have appeared (Rader, 2002), and there has been an increasing international interest in incorporating information literacy into undergraduate curricula in higher education (HE) as a standalone specialism, ‘‘a soft-applied discipline’’ on its own (Johnston & Webber, 2003). Information literacy teaching and research have traditionally been advocated mainly by library and information professionals, having evolved from library skills and bibliographic instruction.
