Ever and again when I return to Michigan, the first and overwhelming fact that strikes me, intimating a presence more than visual, is the persistent flatness of that land. From the wrist where I enter the state, I drive for three or four hours to my destination at the second knuckle of the ring finger, and I hardly find a wrinkle. The scenes that unroll are smooth and fair, and there are no surprises. So I hunt for the venerable things, and for such decorum as they suggest: old farm windmills, everlastingly charming and scenic and often askew, some of them just spinning freely in the wind, year after year, long since unconnected to the water pumps that now lie rusting at their feet; pine-stump fences, still bristling and durable, linking generations of farmers to last century's waves of lumbermen; groves and farm woodlots with sharp boundaries set a hundred years ago; farmhouses of fieldstone here and there, many neglected now but maybe next century's historic homesteads; and long, bright fields of crops, sometimes flanked with somber swaths of fallow farmland.
