The ones who lived in town had only a short walk home, and those who lived farther had to wait until the dances were over to ﬁnd their rides. Alex felt sorry for the kids who lived out of town, and he noticed that every bar and dance hall was in full swing, spewing music into the street. He saw some kids going from place to place, looking in through the big plate glass windows of the bars and dance halls searching for the person who could drive them home.
Even his own brother smoked, and Alex was sure Lupe had not gone to church. His sister Olivia kissed a boy while working out in the ﬁelds. Now he was committing a sin by covering up for all of them and he wondered if it was worse to sin on Sunday. While deep in thought, he spotted Milo rummaging through a nearby trash bin. Alex decided to forgive his friend, and then, as he stood up, he heard the sound of the change rattling in his pocket. Ashamed and guilty, he tried to reassure himself that he had not done anything wrong.
He had lost sight of him several times, and later he noticed a bulge inside James’s pocket but thought nothing of it at the time. He wondered why James had been so generous.
